Little Women 8

Aunt Marsh swore that if Meg wed “that brooke fellow” she would not give her a penny. She did however supply her with a life-time supply of house linens.

“Then I am satisfied. But please hug and kiss me, everyone, and don’t mind my dress. I want a great many cumples of this sort put into it today,” and Meg opened her arms to her sisters, who clung about her…

That’s how a bride should be on her wedding day. So many are standoffish and don’t want to wrinkle their dress or socialize. Give me a wash and wear cotton dress and a floral headband/wreath and I’m happy.

“…the jelly was still in a hopelessly liquid state, while Mrs. Brooke, with her apron over her head, sat sobbing dismally.”

Lol. Been there, done that, learned to move on. However, what I can not move on from is the way men treated the women back then, and still do in some places (ex. my family). For example in the book, Meg has spent all day trying to make Jam/jelly for her husband because he likes it and he still expects dinner on the table when he gets home. Okay. But they had planned on going to her mother’s home for dinner that night. He knew this and still expected Meg to cook a meal!?

“Well, I like that! Where’s the beef and vegatables I sent home, and the pudding you promised?” Cried John, rushing in to the larder.

“I hadn’t time to cook anything. I meant to dine at Mother’s. I’m sorry, but I was so busy,” and Meg’s tears began again.

John was a mild man, but he was human, and after a long day’s work to come home tired, hungry, and hopeful, to find a chaotic house, an empty table, and a cross wife was not exactly conducive to repose of mind and manner.

“It’s a scrape, I acknowledge, but if you will lend a hand, we’ll pull through and have a good time yet. Don’t cry, dear, but just exert yourself a bit, and fix us up something to eat…”

See what I’m saying? She worked all day for something HE wanted and he goes and says “just exert yourself a bit”. WTF! That’s like my husband seeing that I’ve spent 10 hours cleaning the storage room (that is mostly his mother’s hoard of stuff she left when she moved out) and saying “if you just tried harder you could have made supper too.”

No wonder some of us push our husbands down the stairs! Lol.
